Course Description: The fluid power class is a combination class of Hydraulics Level 1 and Pneumatics Level 1. The class is divided evenly between hydraulics and pneumatics and is comprised of classroom instruction (40%) and hands-on lab time (60%).
Prerequisites: None
Course Objectives:
  • Understanding of the basic theories of hydraulic and pnuematic systems
  • Proper identification of hydraulic and pneumatic components
  • Demonstrate and understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic safety
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify components from a schematic drawing and design simple circuits
  • Demonstrate basic troubleshooting techniques of a hydraulic or pneumatic circuit
  • Outline:
  • Introduction to hydraulic components and systems
  • Discussion of hydraulic theories and Pascal's Law
  • Hands-on exercises with hydraulic components includng pumps (gear, piston, vane), pressure controls, directional controls, flow controls, cylinders, motors, accumulators and filters
  • Identify schematic symbols and read schematic diagrams
  • Design basic hydraulic circits and study the aspects of control, flow, pressure, work and torque
  • Introduction to pneumatic components and systems
  • Discussion of pneumatic theories and Gas Laws
  • Hands-on exercises with pneumatic components including compressors, coolers, receivers, filters, dryers, pressure controls, directional controls, flow controls, cylinders, motors, and air tools
  • Identify schematic symbols and read schematic diagrams
  • Design basic circuits and discuss aspects of timing, sequencing, multi-pressure systems, sensors and quick exhaust
