Course Description: This course will give the student an in-depth understanding of the principles of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
Prerequisites: None
Course Objectives:
  • Recognize and interpret GD&T smybology on drawings used in part manufacture and inspection
  • Utilize GD&T techniques by properly implementing symbology on mechanical drawings
  • Become familiar with the identification and use of inspection tools
  • Outline:
  • Dimensioning and Tolerancing - dimensioning units, fundamental dimensioning rules, definitions, tolerancing fundamentals, maximum and least material conditions, basic fits of mating parts, allowance, clearance, force fit, chain and datum dimensioning techniques
  • Terms and Symbols - dimensioning symbols, datum feature symbols, datum target symbols, geometric characteristic symbols, material condition symbols, feature control frame, basic dimensions, print reading
  • Datums - datum feature symbol, datum feature surface, datum reference frame concept, datum target symbols, coplanar surface datums, datum axis, datum center line
  • Material Condition Symbols - conventional tolerance, limits of size, perfect form boundary, regardless of feature size (RFS), secondary and tertiary datum features, datum precedence
  • Tolerances of Form and Profile - straightness, flatness, circularity, free state variation, cylindricity, profile, specifying basic dimension in a note
  • Tolerances of Orientation and Runout - parallelism, perpendicularity, angularity, runout, tangent plane
  • Location Tolerances - position tolerance, locating multiple features, positional tolerance of coaxial features, positional tolerance of nonparallel holes, locating slotted holes, spherical features, fasteners, projected tolerance zone, virtual condition, concentricity tolerance, symmetry
