	Software Used:		Allen-Bradley RSLogix programming software with SLC500, PLC5 or ControlLogix hardware

	Course Description:		This course is designed for municipal employees whose job function includes working with PLCs and programming software. Students will get hands-on experience working with the hardware and software on industrial quality training units. This course will give the student a complete basic understanding of the way a PLC works, how the PLC is programmed and how the PLC interacts with a variety of discrete input and output devices.

	Prerequisites:		The student should have experience with the Microsoft Windows operating system and experience with personal computers.

	Course Objectives:		Identify electrical control components including a variety of input and output hardware and discrete devices Identify the different parts of a PLC and specific PLC modules Discuss how PLCs interact with various input and output components Specify PLC hardware for specific applications Demonstrate the ability to set up communication between PLCs and field devices Demonstrate an understanding of electrical symbols and terminology Demonstrate the ability to write and troublshoot a simple ladder logic program Demonstrate an ability to navigate through a complex ladder logic program Demonstrate an understanding of common PLC software instructions

	Outline:		PLC history PLC hardware identification Identification of field devices Communication with field devices Memory layout (data files vs. program files) Main routines and sub-routines Bit level instructions Timers and counters Programming languages, writing and editing programs Search routines Using the help function Troubleshooting
